Forest Lawn Memorial Park welcomes thousands of visitors every year from near and far. Most visit loved ones, while many come to experience the historic and peaceful nature of the cemetery.
Founded in 1889, Forest Lawn Memorial Park features a beautiful landscape in a park-like setting on 121 acres. Forest Lawn has several gardens with hills, woods, trees and walking areas connected by miles of winding roads. The cemetery is in the heart of Detroit, on the west side of Van Dyke, just south of McNichols. A rich history and strong reputation as one of Metro-Detroit's most-visited cemeteries ensures Forest Lawn will be here for centuries to come.
Forest Lawn holds much of the history of the Detroit area within its borders. Markers and monuments throughout the cemetery memorialize the lives of civil war veterans and major political, civic, religious leaders who served as an important part of Michigan history. There is even a 130-year-old underground cave that was utilized for storage during winter months by civil war veterans. Forest Lawn serves as Detroit’s most multicultural cemetery, with interments of families from at least 28 ethnicities.
Located within its borders are lawn crypt gardens and private mausolea designed to commemorate the lives of those departed. Our chapel mausoleum offers a quiet and calm setting to remember dearly departed loved ones who are interred within the grounds. The mausoleum also offers families a gathering place to pray, celebrate and mourn loved ones. Sections and gardens at Forest Lawn have been designed for single graves, mausolea and niches in a serene park-like setting.
